On Christmas Eve 1984, Coyle and his partner received a report about a car accident. Upon arrival, they found a car crashed into a tree by the roadside due to darkness, fog, and drizzle. Three young men were standing around the car, with their friend inside. By the time rescue brought him out, he was already dead. They had been on their way to a concert.
While developing the photos of the scene, Coyle noticed streaks of red and white light running across the images, and the face of the young man appeared to be screaming above the car's roof. Additionally, there was an image of a brown dog at the car door, sitting and looking back, even though there was no dog present at the scene. It was the dead dog of the young man who had the accident.
