Why do I practice Secret Buddhism propagated by Old Guru
A downpour of rain has benefited all living things to varying degrees, according to their species, thus the small blade of grass such as myself has also benefited greatly from the rain of blessings from Divine Beings and the Buddha of Ten Directions.
Today I would like to share with my dharma friends the struggle I have had with my thoughts and feelings when I first came upon Old Guru’s Secret Buddhism and how it had helped this little grass plant grow to maturity.
I was born on Buddha’s Birthday. The father’s side of my family has a tradition of worshipping the mother Goddess through medium’s rituals worshipping deities (Hau dong). At least one member of the family was predestined to become a medium by the person’s free will or forced to become one during the ceremony; whereas each family in my mother’s side has at least one Buddhist monk or nun.
I was told that Grandmaster Linh Son of Mountain Ta Cu who saved many people with magic powers during the Nguyen Dynasty and nominated by the King, was one of my ancestors, but I am not quite certain in the absence of the family genealogy book.
I studied Buddhism since I was eight, by 10 years old, I officially became a Buddhist nun through the ceremony of taking refuge in the Triple Gems. At 13, I started reciting the Five Dharanis, the Maha Karunika citta (great compassion Dhahrani) the Casket Seal Dharani... without being initiated into Secret Buddhism, along with researching other Mahayana Buddhist scriptures.
At 18, I spent four years studying Basic Buddhism; at 23, another four years of advanced Buddhism at Van Hanh University, meanwhile I was also attending the University of English linguistics.
When I was nineteen, I had somewhat realized the meaning of this teaching: “Form is not different from emptiness; emptiness is not different from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form” and had freed myself from the sorrows that had bound me until then. I felt serenity and peacefulness, and was unusually clear minded. I wondered whether or not that was one of the enlightened form, and reported my state of mind to my elders. However I did not receive any guidance from them. I thought may be my spiritual affinity is not enough.
... And so I continued to focus on my study and my cultivation for about the next blessed 7 years; during which time, I unexpectedly excelled in my studies and was always top of the class in every exam with marks way higher than the one next to me. I became almost completely satisfied and did not know what else to study to advance myself spiritually besides learning Buddhist scriptures and practicing the motto: "Be happy with the present"…
I thought that my life as a Buddhist nun would be the same as other colleagues, that is: to study abroad in India for a PhD in Buddhist Teachings and come home to be a lecturer…and follow a life of what is normally termed 'Serving the Buddha'. However, the Deities had changed my path to another direction:
To work as a team member of Chinese-Vietnamese interpreter of the Buddhist Canon for the next 10 years.
Forgive me for talking too much about myself. I do not mean to be bragging but merely want to share with you the fact that, with all the knowledge I have gained since childhood, it was very difficult for me to accept any other education systems, and this was my biggest obstacle.
Reading briefly through the life of a Buddhist nun like me, everyone would think that I was very lucky and very successful in my spiritual path. However, deep inside my heart I knew that this self-cultivation of mine (learn and conform exactly teachings in the buddhist sutra) would never speedily lead me to enlightenment and salvation, but would increase my ego over time.
I was under the illusion that I was practicing the Bodhisattva virtues saving sentient beings, unaware of the fact that I was wallowing in my ever increasing bad karma day in day out… until I woke up to reality, Alas, I felt miserable and hopeless unable to find my way out. I wanted to escape… to break away from the circle of life. A feeling of being trapped in a burning house with no way of escape. I longed to meet a true Teacher but where could I find one in this still-vast ocean of life. All I could do was to keep praying and praying to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.
“Sincere prayers do receive positive answer.”
In March 2003, I came across Old_Guru's Secret Buddhism (Grandmaster Trieu Phuoc) and my life has changed since. From then, I began to feel that I am really learning and really cultivating - the dharma of the utmost Truth.
